How to Get Started

Your roadmap to securing long-term housing and support for your loved one with developmental disabilities.

Preparing for your loved one’s future takes time and planning. We’ve broken down the process into clear, manageable steps so you know exactly what to do and when to do it.

The good news? You can start today, and each step opens doors to the support and services your loved one needs to live a fulfilling, independent life.

Obtain a Michigan ID

TIMING: Anytime (Age 16-18 is optimal)

This simple step establishes residency and opens the door to everything else. A Michigan ID is required when applying for both Social Security and Medicaid benefits.

Why this matters: Without a state ID, you can’t move forward with other applications. Getting this done early means you’re ready when your loved one turns 18.

Apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Age 18
Once your loved one turns 18, schedule an appointment with your local Social Security office to apply for SSI. This monthly benefit provides financial support for individuals with low income showing less than $2,000 in assets.

Monthly Benefit Amount

$967/month

This income helps cover rent and living expenses.

Important: When SSI is approved, Michigan automatically enrolls your loved one in Medicaid. This happens at the same time—no separate application needed.

Estate Planning & Financial Tools

Can be completed at any time

Protecting your loved one’s financial future doesn’t have to wait. You can set up these tools anytime to ensure they maintain eligibility for benefits while still having access to additional resources.

Key Financial Tools

  • MiABLE Account – A tax-advantaged savings account that doesn’t affect SSI or Medicaid eligibility. Funds can be used for disability-related expenses like housing, transportation, education, and more.
  • Special Needs Trust – A legal arrangement that holds assets for your loved one’s benefit without disqualifying them from government benefits. Perfect for inheritances, life insurance proceeds, or family gifts.

Why this matters: Without proper planning, an inheritance or large gift could disqualify your loved one from the very benefits they depend on. These tools let you provide extra support while protecting their eligibility.
