Life in Our Homes

Our homes are strategically located in Plymouth, Livonia, Redford, and Garden City to give residents easy access to:
Employment/Volunteer opportunities
Shopping and entertainment
Parks and recreation

Transportation Services

Medical facilities
Community events

The right home. The right support. A life worth living.

We offer living arrangements to meet different needs and preferences:

Our staff-to-resident ratios range from 1:4 in larger homes to 1:2 in smaller settings—because some people thrive with more housemates, others prefer a quieter space. Either way, residents get the support they need: medication and money management, health monitoring, personal care assistance, and the kind of companionship that turns a house into a home. We help residents volunteer, attend community events, go out with friends, and live the kind of full, connected life everyone deserves.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the process to establish housing?

It’s approximately 1 – 5 years

What funding streams support long term housing?

Long-term housing is funded by a combination of the following:

  • Social Security Benefits
  • Medicaid Mental Health System Benefits
  • Medicaid Benefits
  • Special Needs Trusts
  • MiAble
Can residents choose their housemates?
Yes, we consider compatibility and preferences when matching housemates. During the intake process we review information submitted by the individual including housing and room mate preferences. We conduct meet and greet activities for the individual and the residents of the prospective home. Meet and greet activities include: bowling outings, dining out, participating in a leisure activity that is of mutual interest. During these meet and greet activities. Both parties, the individual seeking housing and the residents of the prospective home get to know one another and compatibility and comfort level are assessed.
What kind of staff training is required?

Training includes but is not limited to participating in online courses pertaining to recipient rights, medication passing, nutrition and health, person-centered planning and first aid and CPR.

How do you handle medical needs?

Medical needs are carried out at the directive of the individual’s physician. Community Opportunity Center manages all required doctor appointments, partnering with families and physicians to carry out all prescribed medical protocols for the individual. All prescribed medications are organized and securely stored within the home. Staff are trained to follow the Five Rights of mediation passing to ensure each medication is passed timely and correctly.

What happens in emergencies?
During medical emergencies staff notify our Home Administrators and Program Managers, arrangements are made as needed to assist individuals in seeking medical care whenever it is needed, regardless of evening, weekend or holiday hours. COC does this by having an on-call protocol which ensures that leadership staff are always available to assist home staff in an emergency.
